What is the direct-off?
One script. Three directors. One stage.
The Direct-Off is a theatrical showdown where three directors take on the same script and present their unique interpretation, live in front of an audience.
Each version is performed back-to-back during a two-hour event, and at the end, the audience votes for their favorite.
It’s a celebration of creative vision, collaboration, and the magic of direction.

THE
RULES
The Direct-Off Framework
Script:
* All three directors will work from the same 8–10 page script (provided by Fake ID Productions).
* No changes to the script text are allowed (no added dialogue, edits, or cuts).
* Directors may interpret staging, tone, character dynamics, etc.—but must stick to the original lines.
Casting:
* Each director casts their own set of actors.
* Casting must be complete at least one week before the show.
* Actors may only perform in one version of the script.
Rehearsal:
* Directors may rehearse with their cast as much as they like prior to the event.
* All versions should be “off-book” or confidently staged, but it’s not about polish, it’s about vision.
* Each director gets 20 minutes of rehearsal in the theater space on the day-of the event.
Performance:
* Each director gets up to 15 minutes on stage (including transitions).
* They may use basic props, chairs, or costume accents, but no elaborate set builds.
* Lights up, lights down, sound must be minimal and approved ahead of time (standard cues only).
Voting:
* The audience will vote after all three versions are performed.
* Voting will be anonymous and live.
Other Guidelines:
* All performances must be respectful of the playwright’s intent.
* Keep it collaborative, kind, and creative.
